power outage, storm prep

What will happen to your place of business in the event of a power outage? Are you prepared? Electricity is often something we take for granted. It’s so reliable and common that we just assume it will be there, working and keeping our devices afloat. That is until it cuts out altogether. In some cases, companies are left entirely useless, unable to serve customers or complete a single transaction without a source of electricity.

However, having a plan ready for when the power goes out is the smart way to keep your brand ready and functioning, despite the power not being readily available. Depending on the type of industry you’re in, you might be required to keep generators on hand. Should the power cut out, important machines can be kept running with a backup source of power. (Luckily, we can help provide and install reliable generators to service your company remain safe and productive.)

This is true of hospitals, care clinics, grocery stores, even restaurants that keep large amounts of product on hand. Generators help keep important machines running, and they keep the coldest of foods frozen, even without power to help them along.

Other businesses will be fine in shortened timelines. Though you might want to consider POS systems (do you have access to data so customers can still check out without power?), lighting (emergency lights are a must, especially for buildings with few windows.), and more. Take a look at each of these factors so you can be informed about how your location will operate in a power-less situation.

Prep Your Company for Power Outages

No one likes to think about what could happen in the event of a natural disaster, but whether a power outage is short-lived or long term, knowing how your company will fare is imperative to your success. Make a list of every machine or service that uses power, and determine which is needed in order to keep your company running, even at a minimal rate.

This is likely to include things like:

  • POS System
  • Lights
  • Heating/Cooling System
  • Security Alarms and Cameras
  • Fridges (Freezers, Stoves, Ovens, Etc.)
  • Phones
  • Internet Access

Next, you should talk to employees and set forth a plan. What are their responsibilities if or when the power drops? Set a clear timeline of events and inform all of the necessary guidelines. You can schedule a company training, or create booklets that outline steps. (Or why not both?!)

Planning for the worst helps ensure that your brand can remain as functional as possible, even in the event that power is lost.
